“But when he [Peter] saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:30-31)

The passage about Peter walking on water came to mind recently. There is much to say about this story but what stood out the most is Peter’s courage and faith as he walked on water and also his fears when he started to sink. You could say that at one point he took his eyes off of Jesus and instead focused on the storm around him and began to doubt. But, in the middle of his situation, he was quick to cry out to Jesus for help and he was rescued.

Maybe we have not experienced the walking on water like Peter, but we have had similar situations where we felt what he felt. Most of us, if not all, had moments in our lives when we saw God work miracles, when we were full of faith, and then the next day we were hit by a “wave” and started to sink. Our eyes were no longer on the Lord. We became overwhelmed and fearful, and we began to doubt. And all we could see was the strong “wind” all around us. Fear is real, and so is worry and anxiety and many other things we might deal with. But so is Jesus. And He is ready to rescue us when we call out to Him. He is ready to draw us out of “many waters” like the writer of Psalm 18 mentions. And today this is a reminder to look up to the Lord Jesus and call out for help. He is the One who saves. He is the One who rescues. He is the One who takes hold of us and brings us out of mire and darkness. He is our Savior and He is Lord over any storm. Place your trust and hope in Him today, and call out for His help.

“In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From His temple He heard my voice,
    and my cry to Him reached His ears…

He sent from on high, He took me;
    He drew me out of many waters.”

(Psalm 18:6, 16)
