A Place of Refuge
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)
Who do we run to when things get hard? Where do we turn? Being a natural worrier and over-thinker, my initial instinct when a difficult situation would come up was to give in to worry and to try to figure things out on my own. Running to God for help was not always my first option. And it took some time to learn this lesson, and I am still learning it, but I found out that I do not have to face anything alone. Whether in difficult hardships or sicknesses, or simpler things like writing a blog post, God is with us if we call upon Him. The God of the Bible is who He says He is in each situation we have to go through. And His word is true and a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Difficult times are not too hard for Him. And in whatever circumstance, He is the One who changes the heart, who opens and closes doors, who heals and restores, who sets free and who works on behalf of those who trust in Him.
The writer of this Psalm found the secret to facing the hard seasons of life. He made God his refuge and fortress. And we can as well. In the middle of our storms, let us ask God for help and hide in Him. As we face the unknown, let us trust that God takes care of those who hold fast to Him, and, He answers and rescues those who call on Him. And through it all, let us make God our place of refuge.
Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. (Proverbs 30:5)
