“The Lord is my light and my salvation; who shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)

I was recently reminded of the story from 2 Kings 6, where the king of Syria sent an army to surround the city where the prophet Elisha was. He had found out that Elisha was helping the King of Israel in battle and so he sent an army to seize him. When Elisha’s servant saw the enemy’s army he became afraid, but Elisha saw what his servant initially didn’t. God had sent down horses and chariots of fire all around to come to their aid. Those who were with them were more than the army of the enemy.

What made me think of this is that we tend to look at the cup half-empty when things don't go well. We tend to look at what we don’t have, instead of what we do have. We tend to look at who is against us, instead of who is for us.

But, like the Psalmist in Psalm 27, we can resolve in our hearts to look to who God is and choose to not be afraid. God is the one who gives us victory. God is the stronghold of our lives and the light in our darkness. And no matter what or who comes our way, we do not need to be afraid because God is on our side and He works on our behalf.
